Dental Bonding: A Versatile Smile Solution

Experience Dental - Dental Bonding FAQs
Experience Dental - What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding uses durable composite resin, the same material as composite fillings, to repair and reshape teeth. Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth can be restored to like-new condition through a process called Bonded Restoration, offering long-lasting results with routine care. It’s also a great option for enhancing your smile by reshaping teeth, correcting discoloration, and closing gaps—all without veneers.

The Dental Bonding Process

Whether you’re restoring a tooth or enhancing your smile for aesthetic reasons, the dental bonding process remains the same. Here’s what happens during your appointment:

Preparing the Tooth

To protect neighboring teeth, a thin plastic dental matrix is placed between them. The dentist then cleans and dries your tooth before applying a mild acidic gel. This gel roughens the tooth’s surface, allowing the bonding material to adhere securely.

Applying the Composite Resin

Once the gel is removed and the tooth is dried, the dentist applies a tooth-colored composite resin. The resin is added in layers, and each layer is hardened with a special blue light to ensure strength and durability.

Finishing Touches

The dentist checks your bite and polishes the bonded tooth to ensure a smooth, natural look. The result is a flawless tooth that blends seamlessly with the rest of your smile. During future check-ups, your dentist will monitor the bonded tooth for any signs of wear to keep it in top condition. With dental bonding, you’ll walk away with a strong, natural-looking smile you’ll love!

How Does Dental Bonding Compare to Other Options?

When it comes to restoring your teeth or creating your perfect smile, there are many treatments to choose from. The right option depends on your unique needs. During your consultation, we’ll review all your choices and help you make an informed decision. Here’s why dental bonding may be a great fit:

Quick and Painless

Unlike fillings or veneers, dental bonding typically requires little to no drilling, preserving most of your natural tooth. This makes the procedure virtually painless, with minimal preparation needed.

Low Upfront Cost

While treatments like veneers and orthodontics involve a higher cost due to their complexity, dental bonding offers an affordable solution for minor fixes, making it an excellent choice for cost-conscious patients.

Great for Small Repairs

For subtle changes like fixing chips, cracks, or small gaps, dental bonding is the simplest and most efficient option. However, extensive smile transformations may require treatments like veneers, crowns, or orthodontics. Dental bonding is an ideal solution for minor repairs and enhancements, providing quick, affordable results with minimal effort.

Cost of Dental Bonding in Boulder

Dental bonding costs can vary widely depending on your specific needs. Typically, the cost ranges from $300 to $600 or more per tooth without insurance. If dental bonding is needed to repair a damaged or broken tooth, many insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost. With insurance, you can expect to pay around $60 to $120 out of pocket.

Factors That Influence the Cost:

  • The number of teeth needing bonding.
  • Whether new x-rays are required.
  • The amount of composite resin needed.
  • The location of the treated teeth in your mouth.
  • Your overall oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental bonding typically lasts 4 to 10 years or more on front teeth, depending on factors like location, eating habits, and oral hygiene. Regular dental exams can help maintain your bonding, and additional composite resin can be applied if wear and tear is detected.

While not permanent, dental bonding is a durable solution that can last over a decade with proper care, such as routine dental check-ups, healthy eating habits, and good oral hygiene. If needed, the bonding can be reinforced with more composite resin.

It depends on your needs. Veneers are a longer-lasting solution and ideal for making significant or dramatic changes to your smile. Bonding, while less durable, is a cost-effective and minimally invasive option for minor adjustments, as it preserves more of the natural tooth structure.

No, dental bonding doesn’t harm your natural teeth. The tooth remains largely intact beneath the bonding. While the composite material can chip or break over time, it’s easily repaired. However, bonding doesn’t lighten with whitening treatments, so you may want to whiten your teeth beforehand or replace the bonding to match whitened teeth. For enhanced durability, veneers or crowns may be better options.

Missy and Dr. Adam are amazing. After fearing the dentist for over a year, I was looking for somewhere that was truly a high quality dental experience in Boulder that works with medicaid and I am so happy I found this gem. Missy was so supportive in helping me learn what is actually happening to my teeth and my mouth, and I left feeling more empowered than ever in how to care for myself and my teeth with more clarity, understanding, compassion, possibility and encouragement. Thank you!

I had a great experience here, everyone was so nice and friendly. They were a lot more gentle when working on me compared to other dentists and they genuinely seem to care. I went for a second opinion and very happy with what they said. I'm glad I found an honest and trustworthy dentist. I highly recommend. Thank you!

I have only visited two dental offices in the US but this is the best so far. Dr. Altdorfer is very professional, explain each step to me very clearly and finished the procedure swiftly. Today I was there shaping a tooth for a crown. The entire session is painless and as smooth as it can be. Attiya is also very nice. She explained things in detail (about what to be mindful of..etc) before I asked, including things that I needed asking in my previous dentist. I am that kind of people who worries a bit so I still have a question or two. I am glad that they are very patient to answer them. My prior cleaning session with Missy was also great. She did the cleaning very gently and carefully, which I appreciate. Also very nice, calm and clear in communication. 10/10. I think they had a substitute hygienist for a day, name is Bruce as I recall, he also went above and beyond. After he inspected my gum, he gave me a lot of advice and recommendations on how to take better care of my mouth. And he did it in a thoughtful manner. That's where I feel like he genuinely care about his patient. Great place in general. Update: Just went back today to finish my treatment. Same good practice. I have a crown fitting/sitting and 3 fillings, all done in one hour and with no pain. Dr. Altdorfer and Attiya are superb. They told me what they are doing and I should do in each step. Good communication too. What a stark contrast with my previous place (outside of colorado)!
